1967 panel becomes 11 window camper with Dormobile roof

Post by EeVeeWee » Sun Jul 16, 2017 7:04 pm

At October 3th 2015 I bought a Finnish T1 panel in north Germany and at October 10th I started the project in the Netherlands, were I live.
Without any experience of car restorations I learned a lot by reading a lot of topics and studying hundreds of pictures, also on this site.
Thank you all for that! :D
I also did a welding course of a day and the rest I learned myself.
Most of the floor and chassis framework had to be renewed and also the lower 20 to 30 cm edge all around the bus.
I think the bus was used in the mud, because there was a lot of sand in the floor beams!
In Finland there where holes made by a company called Wiima, to create windows in the panel, but of course the glass doesn't fit well in the curved sheet metal. So during the restoration proces I bought original window parts from a 13 window bus, enough to create a 11 window bus.
I also found a nearly complete Dormobile roof in Italy, so I will fit this on the bus also. I only had to make the framework around the hole in the roof myself.
After all the welding the bus had been blasted completely to remove all the dirt, paint and rust and after that put into pure zinc and also a layer of zinc epoxy.
The rear suspension will be from a Bay Window bus with reworked Beetle gear box and new built 1775 CC engine.
The front brakes will be disc brakes with power brake booster.
I try to renew as many parts as possible, but some parts are very hard to find, like the 12 Volt wiper motor.
All the locks I found are NOS and also many other parts like relais and switches.
Also the wire loom will be new like the other electrical parts.
My planning is to create an own camper interior, but I'm no so far yet.
It has been painted now and I am fitting the electrical wires at this moment.
Here are some pictures and also a link to a site with a lot more pictures of the restoration.

I put the bus on some wood and special tiles to be able to go underneath it in a relaxed way.
The coupling of the gear box won't loose its locking bolts, that's for sure.

I got a batch of powder coated parts back, they are like new!
Also a new stainless steel logo for the front.
Nearly all the electric parts are functioning now, also inside of the cab.

Very huge project, and its looking very nice!!! Well done so far. Are those original VW colors. It looks very close to the colors I am planning to paint mine 65. She will get the bottomhalf in iberisch red and the top in pearl white.

The top is VW L472 Beige Grey and I first tried VW L53 Sealing Wax Red, but I found it much too brown.
Now I choose the VW color LY3D Tornado Red.
It's beautiful, especially in the sun and not too orange.

The complete shifting lever, shifting rods and handbrake lever are mounted.
Including the first finished wooden panel.

This week I mounted the pedals and also the accelerator and clutch cable, with a lot of new components.
Also sealed the pipes to leave dirt outside.
I extra greased the pin of the clutch cable, the original lever was worn before and I broke one in my Early Bay bus. :D

I installed the rear shock mountings from Creative Engineering and painted the Wolfsburg West vent wing frames in the right color L472 Beige Grey.

Today I installed the reworked steering box and mounted the steering wheel.
Also put the front bumper at its place.
I am very happy with the looks of the bus front now. :D

Today I started with the brake lines.
The new Late Bay Window gas tank also has some fresh paint now.

The brake lines are ready, now I just have to found out which brake hoses are needed at the back site.
