Then it was a case of sorting out the electrics and preparing a wiring harness for the audio system i had sourced. i wanted tokeepthe dash area free of head unit etc and opted for a Clarion Digital system which was mated with a Digital Bluetooth adaptor. The Bluetooth adaptor was just a plug / play affair and makes it very easy to operate from iPhone / Android :-)

The wiring was not quite so easy but patience and methodogy were on my side........ I needed a heater to keepme toasty as it was 0 degrees outside!!

I then had a few months off as the weather was pants and it was difficult to move vehicles about to get to do anything in / on them.

The beetle was dragged out of the garage however and MOT'd - washed it and then sold it as i had done only 40 miles in 2 years :-(

We all went out to a local farm/park and the comments we received were ace!

Then March 2018 arrived and i was invited to join the Cruise to Ninove. Wasnt sure if i was ready for a full-on 3 days of driving, or if we would be pushing it driving so many miles at a time.......

August 2018 and it was time to give the Passau some love. Although it was 100% original when i collected it from the one ownerfrom new in Germany, i felt that the underside needed some protection from the elements as the paint was beginning to showsigns of breaking through to the metalwork.

I had it media blasted and zinc/primer coated underneath, as well as stonechip protected, then topcoated in its original colour. The guys at Colourtone Stockport did a fine job of scanning the colour and mixing it up!

And then to finishoff, LED bulbs were fitted....

We were all set for our first outing with trailer and bus completed!! I had also gone through a moment of wanting an original set of 15" Beetle Smoothy wheels fitted. They didnt stay on for long as i just didnt like them - i set about looking for something else......

We only live a few miles from the Welsh coast so had a fair few trips over to Barmouth / Harlech / Neyyn. The weather was certainly with us and made the weekends so much more enjoyable!

NOS and approx 1956 :-0

I also had the original seats back from BAT, retrimmed in the matching leather to the rest of the bus.

October 2018

Now that the bus is pretty much finished (would never admit to that in front of the missus), I’m trying to replace a few of the bits that niggle me. As most people would probably agree, it’s best to try to get good used genuine pets or NOS if at all possible (or not exorbitantly priced).
The repro parts are starting to be replaced.....

This NOS mirror was found in Germany for not a lot of money and well worth every Euro!!

October 2018 Part ii

Bus was in the workshop for fitting of the fog lights and Fuch’s so took the opportunity to give it a good clean underneath as it had done about 8000 miles since being restored and I had been out in all weather in it.

It certainly paid to get all the Red9 bits powder coated and most of the ancillary parts all came up pretty good after a few hours of fettling :-)

Repro parts removal

As mentioned previously, some of the repro parts that were sourced when the bus was being put back together have been less than acceptable.

Both of the door locking mechanisms (Chinese) were useless and didn’t work as they should have done. The drivers one squeaked constantly from day 1 and really got on my tits. I found a set of NOS ones from Italy some time ago and finally got around to fitting them earlier this year.
