Ignition with steering lock.

Post by tony73tt »

Hi

I have a 67 crew cab that came from factory, with steering lock. :(

Question: can it be removed without creating to much damage?

There is a blanking plug where the ignition Normally is, so could do away with the locking steering.

The lock is temperamental and now in the locked position. :(

Do you have a picture of the lock or type of lock..?
If it is a 67 with factory lock.. does it look like this?

If so these bolt to the underside of the Speedo housing. The column slides into the lock and the outer column has a hole through which the plunger goes. The inner column may have vertical strips or a collar with a hole in it.
Getting the lock off will involve taking steering wheel off maybe dropping the dash tray down. Unbolting column mounting bracket from Speedo pod etc.
But then the plunger will possibly require to be retracted? So sounds like a Column out job?

Have you tried squirting graphite dust into lock and gentle manipulation.
Is it a lock or plunger sticking issue?
Is the wheel able to move back and forwards to release any binding?

If it is the type with a split collar and two shear off bolts then gentle persuasion with a centre punch is needed!
I have removed lots of columns from vehicles...using this technique!

It’s done it before, but think it’s stuck fast this time.

I can move the steering wheel slightly (left and right).

It’s a German bus that was exported to Bolivia. I have imported it here.

The birth certificate states locking steering, so assume it’s original, but possibly been replaced.

Gentle gentle tap with hammer?
Squirt of Graphite powder..?
Remove ignition lock from back side?
Gentle gentle wiggle of key!
