Spa 2017

Post by wizard 1066 »

Who is going to Spa this year, is anyone else planning to go on Thursday/friday on the chunnel or ferry.

It would be great to cruise over to belgium in convoy with an english group, we had planned to return Monday/Tuesday.

Anyone up for the event.

For the folks that have been in the past where is the best place to stop/camp, routes to take, things to avoid, any advice with regards this trip would be apreciated.

I've always gone on an early ferry on the Thursday beforehand, tunnel is quicker but the ferry gives a nice break from driving. Avoid Brussels like the plague. Coming home we stop at a campsite called "le romantique" near steenvoord, it's only about 25 minutes to Dunkirk from there. If I can find the details I'll post them up. It's superb show, with a road trip included, plus it gives people like Stirling moss the chance to say he's driven on the same track as a load of elderly vw's!

Thanks for the info and recomendations, always good to hear from people that have been before, as its our first trip abroad with the camper not sure what to do or avoid, if all goes well it might be an annual trip or maybe travel abroad more often.

Get there as early as possible. Campsite is packed by thursday evening and there are huge queues to get in.

We expect to set off on Thursday, stay near the UK side of the tunnel and go across Friday AM, Thats if all goes to plan,
Stay while Monday AM then make our way to either France or back across to the UK and camp somewhere before traveling back home, we only have a limited time off work for this trip, hope we can still find somewhere to camp when we get there, already paid for the advance tickets.
Still got to arrange for the tunnel crossing yet as we would like to go across with others in the club.

Been in touch with a few friend who have been before and stayed at the track for a few days, then moved to Camping L’Eau Rouge.
So it looks like we'll take a couple of extra days in Belgium.
Also recomended Stavlot as a good place for bars and restaurants and to look around, its not too far to travel from either the Spa track or the camp site, so adjusted the tunnel crossing times to include another day at no extra cost, Yhay.

We will be traveling abroad for the first time in the van things are getting close so started checking things over, oil change, tyres, brakes, supplies/spares, paperwork and insurance, all the usual suspects.
Not too sure how things go as to fuel stations and where to stop for rest and food, I expect there to be service stations at some point, or rest areas where we can put the kettle on and get a bite to eat.
Was hoping to be going with a group as we can't be the only ones going for the UK.

Make sure you don't buy E10 fuel, 10% ethanol. Larger stations have 95ron normal fuel but if they don't use the 98ron stuff if they only have E10 at 95.

There are plenty of aires on the main roads, on the toll roads the toilets are cleaner but as the main roads are free we put up with it!

Have a great time, don't forget to post some pictures on here.

Thanks for the advice, if we can get as much info about the trip before we set off it will help us plan things, didn't even think about different fuel grades just expected to be able to get the same stuff we get here, estimated how much fuel we will need and got the breatherlisers, dont want a fine for not having any, along with a new sat nav with updated maps.

Just been looking at routes to Spa and google maps have given us a few options, north onto the E40 & E42 and looks like its mostly motorway, then theres the A25-A27-E42 route, note sure what the best route would be, also the different A and E roads are, any advice if you have done the trip before.

Heres the first few shots our trip to Spa, we managed to get down to the tunnel without any drama and it looks like the vent scoops we made have helped to keep the engine cool, only time will tell, plenty of space in the train.
got talking to the guy in the 4x4 behind us and he was going to Spain and then off to Africa, and I thought ours was a long trip.
