Re: Distributor drive
You should avoid rotating the crank with the distributor drive installed until/unless the distributor is bolted down because of that problem. If the steel distributor drive jumps up and the crank is rotated with the drive no longer properly meshed with the softer brass gear on the crank, it can dama...

Re: Alternative to Permatex High Tack?
Thanks both. I've had a couple of recommendations for Hylomar Blue and Gasgacinch. I have some blue already, so I'll use that on my axle seals.

Alternative to Permatex High Tack?
Can anyone recommend a non-hardening gasket sealer that is easy to remove with common solvents like methylated spirits or white spirit? I've used Permatex High Tack (80062) but I had to buy it from ebay and they won't ship it to the UK any more (hazardous material). Are there any good equivalent pro...

Re: M code
Yes I've heard that , but what does that mean? Kind regards Neil Today that would mean a vehicle that wasn't ordered for a specific customer. They go in to a pool of vehicles at strategic depots that dealers can draw down from. I'd guess it was the same back in the day for VW, particularly given ho...

Re: fuel gauge and clock resto
Don't know about the fuel gauge, but any decent old school jeweller / clock maker / watch maker should be able to fix the clock. From the pictures I've seen, they're pretty basic electromechanical clock movements. If that's too expensive, they should be able to fit a new quartz movement in place of ...

There's a guy in the US who sells them on ebay, but it's pretty easy to make one. Link to the ebay listing and photos of the one that I made are in this link... viewtopic.php?f=5&t=124341

Mine is looking sullenly at me from the corner of the garage, demanding to know when I'll fit it. It's been waiting for two and a half years.

Re: Engine number
Without the old registration documents; I think VW are your only option to confirm that, but even then the can only tell you if the number is correct, not the engine itself. If you request the birth certificate; they won't tell you the engine number, but if you send them the number of the engine tha...

Re: Rear Light Issue
Fast flashing suggests insufficient load on the relay. Have you checked the front indicator is working on that side? You may also have a blown bulb.
