Re: 66 Devon Caravette

Hello campers! Just thought I should check in and give a quick update on the Caravette being as it’s over 2 years since my last post. I have got embroiled on a number of other projects but the Devon remains the go to for any family trip. Since I last posted we have been to Devon umpteen times, Wales...

Re: '58 Turbo Samba

That's some pretty serious weight savings! At least you'll know it's 100% underneath it all now.

The floors are back in and things are starting to come together now. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2100800.jpg https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2100799.jpg And that is up to date. We found a 20- engine from 1954 which is fantastic news as that means we have pretty much all of the pa...

Re: 1954 Deutsche Post Barndoor

The body panels were unpicked and cut up as required. This was the only way to Ensure each panel is as straight and solid as it can be. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2095577.jpg The firewall was repaired using the parcel tray! https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2095576.jpg Panels goin...

Re: 1954 Deutsche Post Barndoor

Here’s an update on progress from Irv’s workshop. First job was to separate the body from the chassis https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2082457.jpg The chassis was repaired and straightened on the BD jig. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2089286.jpg The body is in a sorry state but as m...

Re: 1954 Deutsche Post Barndoor

Definitely Phil! Love the roof rack.

The chassis is well on its way, I’ll insert pictures *here* shortly.

Anyone got a 1954 20- BD engine lying around??

Re: What are reduction boxes really like?

1776, RGB, tall 4th and 195 tyres. Awesome set up.

That said, having owned a Bay, you’ll notice the difference.

Personally I would buy the bus you like and not make the decision solely on the suspension - the bolt on bolt off parts are easier to manage over the years than the bodywork.

Re: 1954 Deutsche Post Barndoor

I mean where to begin??! The goal is to save as much original metal and paint as possible. The bullet holes are of course staying 😂. A lot of the panels will be unpicked to get repaired and straightened out before re-fitting. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2078622.jpg https://www.thesamba.c...

Re: 1954 Deutsche Post Barndoor

I took a drive up to Barrow in Furness last week and checked out the Postbus. Contrary to my last post, this won’t be easy. It’s pretty bad. I have been having massive panic attacks but Irv is relaxed of course. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/2078629.jpg https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/...

Re: Best tires for 14 wheel rims

If your speedo was OG and calibrated to origional crossply tyre 7.00 x 14 tubeless size . I would be interested to know what GPS says your speed is when the speedometer shows 60m.p.h. The chart above indicates that the actual speed would be higher than indicated! So risk of travelling over speed li...

Re: Best tires for 14 wheel rims

I just fitted 195 r14c Vitour tyres today from Northants Tyres. £288 for 4. I have a 185 r14c spare which would hopefully suffice to get me off the motorway at a pinch. I have run 185 r14c’s for 10 years and been happy enough. I am not sure how much of a difference the extra half inch height will ma...

Re: 1954 Deutsche Post Barndoor

Looks like a great find. Congratulations on the acquisition and good luck on the journey. I do love a Bundespost van  Thanks, I wasn't planning on doing another but this came up and I couldn't resist. It should be easy relative to the show bus and a walk in the park compared to your Samba!
